I'm running to restore balance on Beacon Hill and bring integrity back to politics. As the only Republican candidate running for State Representative in the 4th Suffolk District; I am the candidate who can restore
balance and represent the voters, and not the political establishment.
I am the candidate at the right time and with the right experience to address voters' concerns of today:
Jobs: Unemployment remains above 9% and is even higher among the trades. Our legislators need to focus on bringing jobs to Massachusetts.
- Small business owners provide the essential jobs of today and will tomorrow. I am a small business owner and will fight to create an environment that will allow small and family owned businesses to thrive.
- I will support the development of the South Boston Waterfront community in a responsible manner to create immediate jobs and provide lasting benefits to South Boston and Dorchester.
- I will be a voice pushing to implement the proposed Boston Convention & Exhibition Center expansion to make Boston a worldwide leader in exhibitions and conventions. These exhibititions and conventions will provide jobs and revenue for South Boston and Dorchester.
- I will fight to ensure that development projects employ Boston residents with fair and competitive bidding practices.
Taxes: Massachusetts has some of the highest state taxes in the entire country. These higher taxes cause businesses and residents to leave Massachusetts.
- I will fight against any increase in your taxes.
- I support rolling back the individual tax rate to 5%.
-
The 2010 competitiveness study by the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce ranks Massachusetts as having the 8th highest corporate tax burden in the country. With unemployment above 9% we can no longer afford these high costs for our job providers. I will be a strong advocate for a simplification of the Massachusetts business tax laws:
- I will support the Boston Chamber of Commerce Renew Massachusetts Initiative
- I will work to eliminate minimum excise taxes, sting taxes and tangible property taxes.
- I will work to simplify the annual filing fees for all entity types
Reform: Corruption, political patronage, and wasteful spending on Beacon Hill needs to end. I will be a strong leader and stay true to my belief that state representatives are the fiduciary watchdogs for the taxpayers. As an auditor, I have been a watchdog and will fight to restore accountability and transparency to our state government.
- We need to end political patronage. I believe politicians should be the first to enact a pay freeze on their salaries during difficult economic times. Politicians should no longer receive state defined benefit pensions or annual per diems (if a politician lives within the average commute area).
- Illegal Immigration violates the law. Our state government continues to incentivize illegal immigrants by providing them with taxpayer-funded state benefits. I support legal immigration, and feel that immigrants who follow the law bolster our communities. State benefits must be preserved for citizens who follow the proper immigration laws. I will fight to end benefits for illegal immigrants.
- The Massachusetts state pension fund is underfunded by approximately $22 billion. We need real pension reform to stop abuse caused by political patronage.
- I will fight to improve our public records law. Massachusetts ranks near the bottom for accessibility to public records. In a state that prides itself on intellectual capital, we need efficient and effective ways to make more information available in order to allow the public and the press to hold government officials accountable.
- We need to find ways to reduce costs in our health care system. I support more transparency with respect to price and quality of service by health care providers, the elimination of costly mandated benefits, and an increase in the number of providers through medical malpractice reform.
- We need to reform our state Pacheco Law. This will allow for more competitive contracting to help reduce government costs.
Education: I believe education is the single greatest gift we can provide our children. It provides the gateway for future opportunities.
- I support increasing the number of charter schools.
- I support increasing the number of advanced work classrooms (AWC) in South Boston. The students in these classrooms are some of our brightest students and we need to continue to find ways to allow them to succeed in Boston Public Schools.
- The Fourth Suffolk District has two schools that fail to meet our state’s education standards. Massachusetts and the City of Boston have a plan to help turn these schools around. I will support that plan in order to bring all our schools to the highest level of achievement.
- Massachusetts needs to continue to fight for federal money, including “Race to the Top Funds”. These critical funds will continue to help our children. I will be a strong advocate to protect the high standards of education in Massachusetts and will fight to ensure our urban schools continue to improve.
- Ultimately, we need restore neighborhood schools to create a community where new families want to stay and raise their children.
